RENE HIS (1877-1960) STUNNING LARGE OIL RIVER SCENE Picture(s) and Description:
Rene Charles Edmond His (French, 1877 - 1960) "Bord de la Riviere, oil on canvas, signed lower right, offered without reserve. This is a quite fantastic early - mid 20th Century oil on canvas by this extremely well known and well listed French artist. It is absolutely typical of his work - with the utterly captivating image of a hot and lazy French morning on the river. It is extremely well painted as usual, and is signed lower right. It is a fantastic big size, the canvas itself measuring 45 x 60cm and it is offered UNFRAMED. The photos show what it will look like once framed. This is one of the most attractive and most accomplished paintings by His I have seen with none of the gloomy dark hues which he sometimes used. Rene His was born in the small town of Colombes, France in 1877. Although little is recorded about his life, he was taught by the distinguished teachers; Jules Lefebvre, Tony Robert-Fleury and Leon Tanzi. However, the most important influence on his work appears to have been the well known artist Henri Biva who shared a similar desire for perfection in the depiction of woodland and river banks. He became a member of La Societe des Artistes Francais in 1897 and received a commendation, followed by a bronze medal, in 1900. L'Exposition Universelle also honoured him in the same year. He rarely ventured far afield and became something of a recluse. However, he did travel to the coastal regions of Provence and to Algeria. Examples of his work during this period are comparatively rare. His work was successfully sold, for many years in France, through the Leon Gerard Gallery. Collectors and critics alike across the Channel were captivated by his outstanding treatment of the interaction of light on water and demand grew for his paintings in Britain. He is a very important 20th Century artist, with nearly 300 listings on artprice.com. Although his smaller paintings usually sell for around $1500 - $2500, larger works such as this command a far higher price as can be seen below. You will also note that he has achieved spectacular prices in the US too. The highest price for a Rene His painting was achieved in 2004, when "Campement au bord de l'oued" sold for over $90,000!
