About The Artist This biography from the Archives of AskART: Known for marine paintings from subjects he observed in the waters off New York, James Buttersworth lived long enough to depict the early steamship era. His career spanning sixty years was dedicated to portraits of all types of ships at sea such as racing clipper ships, steamers, and yachts. Nearly 600 of his paintings have been found, and his contribution in preserving this colorful chapter in American history is profound. His special skill was portraying the majesty, grace, and movement of sailing vessels, and viewers have a strong sense of being pulled along because of the curves and flow he conveyed in his wind-filled sails. He applied paint thinly, primarily in oil, and used a variety of grounds including canvas, milkboard, wood panels, and metal. A meticulous draftsman, Buttersworth had an eye for exact detail, and painted clipper ships and great sailing yachts as well as historical conflicts with battleships. The paintings are usually made dramatic by stormy skies and churning ocean waves. He was born in Middlesex County, England, and it is thought that his grandfather was Thomas Buttersworth, 1768-1828, and his father Thomas Buttersworth, Jr, 1797-1842, both renowned marine painters. Although his heritage is unproven, it is obvious James Buttersworth was well schooled in the tradition of English marine painting. Between 1845 and 1847, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Hoboken, New Jersey, and little is known of him before that time. He brought many of his paintings with him from England to sell, and Currier and Ives company purchased some of them to convert into lithographs. He benefited from the wide exposure this association gave his work. Another break came when he exhibited and sold paintings through the American Art Union from 1850 to 1852 in New York City, and, as a result, was commissioned to make a series of drawings for the yacht race of 1851 in England. He supported a large family and lived in West Hoboken, New Jersey with a view of the New York harbor. He prowled the water in a small boat, which is obvious because his perspectives are that of being on the water. HARRY STUART FONDA (1864-1942) MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA California Impressionism of a foggy day on the Monterey coast by Harry Stuart Fonda (1864-1942) with Bohemian Club exhibition label verso. Purchased from a family descendant of Fonda. Fonda originally mounted the canvas to stretchers, but, at some later point, took it off the stretchers and mounted the canvas on pressboard to accommodate the frame, which he must have decided looked good on the painting. Scott A Shields, in his excellent book "Artists at Continents End" writes about Fonda's stature and importance to the Monterey art colony during the early 20th century.
Mexican Painted Tin Retablo with Tin Nicho ~ 19th Century ~ ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Wonderful hand-painted Mexican retablo, painted on tin and enclosed in a handmade tin nicho. Unsigned - Late 19th - early 20th century. SIZE: Retablo - 7" x 10" / Nicho - 8.25" x 13" x 2.5" This religious painting depicts the Madonna and Child, both crowned, and with a wreath of roses behind them. The painting is quite beautiful and in the traditional Naive - Folk Art manner seen in Spanish Colonial painting of Latin America during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This example probably was painted around 1875 - 1890's. The retablo is housed in (just loosely placed into) a tin and glass hand made 'nicho'. The nicho is probably of later construction, possibly around 1920 - 1930's. It has a box form, with glass sides and a hinged front door, but the glass is missing from the door. The nicho is decorated only with a cut-out 'rising sun' finial on the top of it. On the back of the nicho which has the remnants of blue transparent paint, some impressed letters can also be seen. they are from the original tin container that the tin sheets were cut from. Both the retablo painting and the tin nicho are in good ethnographic condition, as seen in the photographs and described. The glass is missing from the front door of the nicho. The nicho has dents, rust, etc. The painting is in antique original condition with some small scratches to the surface, as shown. Also some light soiling to the surface of the painting and some very slight bending of the tin. This piece is a very fine, old, and attractive example of Spanish Colonial style Mexican painting. This item will be a museum quality addition to any collection of Latin American Art and will display beautifully in any Mid Centry Modern, Southwest, Arts and Crafts, Sante Fe - Taos Style, or Spanish Colonial - Mexican decor. Please look carefully at all the photographs to view the details and condition of the item. Please e-mail with any questions ... we always respond quickly! Shipped from San Francisco, California, USA. International shipping by USPS. Items shipped to a location in California are subject to CA State sales tax.All of our pieces are guaranteed authentic, as described, and to your satisfaction, with a full money-back guarantee, including return shipping, if returned promptly and in good condition. Thank you for looking!

.:: Antique American Beach Scene - Late 19th Century/Early 20th Century - Unsigned ::. Click Pictures to Enlarge :: Description This is new piece we acquired from a recent estate sale. It is an antique American Impressionist painting depicting a beach scene with several umbrellas and people lounging around. An American flag is standing tall in the distance. The painting has writing on the reverse and from what was written, we have determined that this painting has been passed down through a few generations, and may have been originally acquired from the owner's mother's wealthy friend. It was also painted prior to 1904, which is also written on verso. There are a few other words written but most of it has deteriorated and came off. On the right side reads "maybe worth a lot of money?". The reverse still retains the sticker of the F.W. Devoe & Co. who manufactured the artist board. The painting had been framed with an original antique frame. We did not remove the painting from the frame and we believe this is the original frame for the artwork. Excellent condition and a great buy!! Oil on artist board. :: Size 9 3/4 x 18 1/2 - painting size 13 1/2 x 22 1/4 - frame size :: Shipping For customers located at west part like CA, Las Vegas, we will add $10 to the shipping fee due to the expensive UPS shipment.
