All Customs forms will state actual selling price of items shipped internationally. If you don’t absolutely love lilacs you’ve probably never been around them very much. Around here, when they come into bloom in the spring, the air is filled with the most wonderful perfume you can imagine. (I don’t have to tell that to folks from New Hampshire, of course. The lilac bush is their state bird.) Don’t stop here. There is something I just MUST tell you about this painting. It was sold from a home in Cincinnati, Ohio several months ago. I fell in love with it immediately even though it was filthy dirty. There were several oil paintings signed by Rookwood Pottery artists in the home, but this one isn’t signed. Still, it could very well be by one of the pottery decorators from around the turn of the century. I don’t really care one way or the other. The colors are bright, and the work is obviously the work of a professional painter. Overall including the original frame = 31 ¼” by 27 ¼” Painting on Stretched Canvas = 24” by 20” Now I want to show you something important. That is how it looked when I brought it home from the sale. I could only barely make out the colors because of years of buildup and dirt, and it had three tiny slits in the canvas. Well . . . I did something I rarely do. I called a friend of mine who retired as a paintings restorer at a museum. She agreed to do the work for me. I was thrilled because she’s the best there is. When I drove over to pick it up, I couldn’t believe my eyes. But before I ever got in the door, she said, “Dang you, Dennis. I must have removed a half cup of $&#* from that canvas. It took me forever!” I learned two things that day. 1st: She has a “temperament.” And 2nd: She don’t work cheap. She also told me she had repaired the three little slits, which I hadn’t even noticed. Here at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:" First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less. And, I never end auctions early or use BIN. Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it. So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so's you don't forget about it later. I went through that big long boring story to make a point, and that point is amplified by the fact that I wasn’t the only one at that auction who loved the painting. I paid dearly for it. Then I paid my friend, the miracle worker. So the point is: I’ll probably lose my butt on this painting, but I feel good about myself for rescuing it from decades of neglect. (It’s so hard being me, sometimes. Other times, I’m ok with it.) It is ready to hang and enjoy for at least a couple more lifetimes. The frame has some dings and losses, but it’ll be outshined by the painting anyway. You may want to have it restored as well. I would have, but I’m already in hock up to my earballs in this thing. Still – Even though I like to complain, I don’t really have anything to complain about. Life is good and spring is just around the corner.
